Statement from Democratic Floor Leader Christine Greig on Republican efforts to undercut executive office powers

Wednesday, December 5, 2018

LANSING — Today, House Republicans rushed through House Bill 6553 to allow the Legislature an absolute right to intervene in court proceedings, effectively undermining the power of the attorney general's office and ignoring the will of the voters who elected Attorney General-elect Nessel last month. In response to its passage, state Rep. Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills) issued the following statement:

“This power grab is a deliberate attempt by legislative Republicans to silence the voices of the 4.3 million Michiganders that made their choice clear in the last election. Not only does this bill undermine our duly elected executive officers, it threatens the separation of powers that underpin our democracy. Let’s stop wasting our time and taxpayer money on misguided proposals like this, and allow our incoming governor, attorney general and secretary of state to do the job they were elected to do.”
