Statement from State Representative Brandon Dillon (D-Grand Rapids) on the devastating cuts to education passed in the School Aid Budget today

Thursday, May 26, 2011

“Make no mistake, House Republicans today passed a plan that once again balances the state budget on the backs of our kids - and this is in addition their huge tax hikes on our families and seniors. They manufactured a fiscal crisis by raiding the School Aid Fund, which actually has a surplus of hundreds of millions of dollars, in order to pay for a massive tax cut for corporations and in violation of the promise of Proposal A. They did all of this in spite of thousands of residents across Michigan telling them that this is not the path they want our state to take. Businesses will not locate in places where they can’t find the talented workers they need. By taking money from our schools and denying them the resources they need to educate our kids, the Governor and Republican leaders are taking a giant step backward from the work we’ve done to revitalize our economy.”
