LANSING – State Representative Mark Meadows (D-East Lansing) today announced the winners of the 69th District Citizenship Award. The award is given to local high school students who exhibit strong leadership within their schools and communities, demonstrate a mutual respect for others in the school community and exemplify hard work and responsibility in their school performance.
In addition to providing the award to recognize the students' achievements, Meadows donates $100 to each district's educational foundation, a nonprofit that works to raise and distribute funds for classroom materials.
At Haslett High School, the winners are Brent Hewitt, son of Russell and Linda Hewitt; Nisha Hollingsworth, daughter of Rawie and Saleela Hollingsworth; and Jonathan Sheets, son of Michael and Melinda Sheets.
At Okemos High School, the winners are Darby Dudley, daughter of Daniel and Kimberly Dudley; Kevin Vermeesch, son of Joseph and Carol Vermeesch; and Kelsey Behan, daughter of Michael and Tracy Behan.
At Williamston High School, the winners are Taylor Stevens, daughter of Greg and Amy Stevens; and Scott Bowlin, son of Darrell and Stephanie Bowlin.
"In order to attract the companies that offer good-paying jobs in high-tech industries, Michigan needs a highly skilled workforce," Meadows said. "These students are exactly what 21st century job providers are looking for: hard-working, educated and determined. I commend these young men and women for their success inside the classroom, and the example they have set for their peers outside the classroom as well."
